How we work

At Karitane® we pride ourselves on providing a professional and thorough service whether for a short-term placement or more permanent requirements.

We have a personalised approach to all our permanent and casual placements.  Karitane® recognises that every family is unique and has its own special requirements. That’s why we take time to talk personally with you and fully understand what your needs are, and to get a feel for the qualities you would like in your ideal nanny or babysitter .

We don’t send just anyone to meet you – all our candidates are carefully selected and submitted to you with your family’s special requirements in mind.

All candidates (including our babysitters) are:

  • personally interviewed in our offices;
  • reference checked;
  • New Zealand Police screened under the Vulnerable Childrens Act.

Our minimum criteria for our candidates include:

  • a full, clear New Zealand drivers licence;
  • a recognised New Zealand childcare qualification and/ or a minimum of three years’ experience;
  • a first aid certificate.

To find your version of a super nanny, baby whisperer or dream babysitter, simply call us on 0800 222 121 or complete our client registration form.

A nanny cares for your children in your home and will provide them with a stimulating and safe environment in which to grow and develop.  Karitane® nannies are professional child carers who are qualified in childcare and/ or have several years of experience.

The primary role of a nanny is to care for your children. Nannies perform “nursery duties” which involve looking after children and their belongings. Usually this includes children’s laundry and cooking, keeping bedrooms, play areas and the kitchen clean and tidy.

Our executive nannies can also help with household management, tradespeople and household admin.

All our nannies are selected for their professionalism, honesty and commitment to working with children and their families.

Regrettably, we do not facilitate placements for after-school nannies. We recommend exploring local community pages or school newsletters for suitable advertising opportunities.

The Karitane® Process

The step-by-step guide to our services is set out below.

1.    Register with Karitane® – it’s free!

Either call Karitane® on 0800 222 121 or and complete our client registration form.  We’ll then call you to discuss your needs and your vision of the ideal carer for your child/children.  It’s important that you give us as much information as possible to give us the opportunity to find the perfect candidate for you.

2.    Candidate selection

We’ll start contacting suitable nannies and place a brief job description of your role on our website.   We will then send you the profiles of candidates that we think are suitable; these include their CV, copies of their certificates, any written references and a photo.

3.    Interviews with your chosen nannies

Once you’ve decided who you’d like to meet, call Karitane® and we will co-ordinate an interview with the nanny/ies on your behalf.  We recommend that you meet at your home to discuss your requirements and what the job entails, their experience and their background, as well as your particular needs.  We can provide advice on interview questions.

4.    Employment agreement and PAYE

When you’ve found the nanny for you, you’ll need to have an employment contract between you and your nanny. Karitane® can help you with this as well as provide market nanny rates and payroll services (as an employer you are responsible for paying your nanny’s PAYE and KiwiSaver contributions).

5.    Placement fee and the Karitane® Guarantee

Once the placement is confirmed, a fee is payable.  Our placement fee is a percentage of the nanny’s annual salary + GST (different rates apply depending on the type of placement). The fee covers the placing of a candidate and comes with a six-week guarantee period. In the unlikely event that the nanny does not work out, we will either you find a replacement nanny or provide you with a pro rata refund.

6.    Support

We’ll call you after your nanny has been with you for a couple of weeks to make sure your nanny is settling in, and again in a month to make sure all is going well and to help with any questions that may have arisen since your nanny started working with you.
